The Friendly Beasts: A December of Blogging

Although I mostly use my blog at Livejournal  (http://aunt-reexy.livejournal.com/these days for book reviews and reading challenges, I'm exercising my blogging muscle for an additional reason for a little while.

Last year, I joined Kellie Martin (@Kellie_Martin) for a Dec of extreme giving. Every day for the month of Dec, we attempted to find a way to give back...to our friends, family, communities, and beyond. We shared our challenges and successes via Twitter, using the #extremegiving hashtag---it became a great sharing opportunity as we inspired and encouraged each other to think creatively. It set the tone for not only a wonderful Christmas-time, but provided motivation to "do more" in 2011...and I did!

This year, I'm taking that same spirit to a new task. Inspired by one of my favorite holiday songs, I'll be using Dec as an opportunity to Tweet and blog about 31 organizations that are dedicated in some fashion to the care, rescue, adoption and/or welfare of our animal friends. Using the hashtag #friendlybeasts, I hope to draw attention to only some of the thousands of organizations, globally, that are working to make the world a more friendly, kind, educated place, ones that help honor the idea that humans are meant to be guardians and partners of the other creatures that share our space.

If you're an animal lover, I hope you'll join me through the hashtag #friendlybeasts: share your own animal rescue stories and your favorite organizations. I hope you'll browse the organizations mentioned, do your own research, ask your questions and, perhaps, be inspired to give your time and/or money to helping our furred and feathered siblings, The Friendly Beasts of our planet.

The Friendly Beasts
Old English Christmas Carol

Jesus our brother, kind and good
Was humbly born in a stable rude
And the friendly beasts around Him stood
Jesus our brother, kind and good.

"I," said the donkey, shaggy and brown,
"I carried His mother up hill and down;
I carried her safely to Bethlehem town."
"I," said the donkey, shaggy and brown.

"I," said the cow, all white and red
"I gave Him my manger for a bed;
I gave Him my hay to pillow His head."
"I," said the cow, all white and red.

"I," said the sheep with curly horn,
"I gave Him my wool for His blanket warm;
He wore my coat on Christmas morn."
"I," said the sheep with curly horn.

"I," said the dove from the rafters high,
"Cooed Him to sleep that He should not cry;
We cooed Him to sleep, my mate and I."
"I," said the dove from the rafters high.

"I," said the camel, yellow and black,
"Over the desert, upon my back,
I brought Him a gift in the Wise Men's pack."
"I," said the camel, yellow and black.

Thus every beast by some good spell
In the stable dark was glad to tell
Of the gift he gave Emmanuel,
The gift he gave Emmanuel.
