Friendly Beasts, Day 3: Performing Animal Welfare Society (PAWS)

Recent headlines regarding fines against Ringling Brothers circus, and those about the slaughter of nearly 50 exotic animals when their "owner" released them to roam freely near a small community in Ohio, have captured the attention of the US public, however briefly it may hold.  But for those still paying attention, they may want to take a look at PAWS.

Providing a humane sanctuary for animals that have been the victims of the performance or exotic trade industries, PAWS looks for the best ways to care for an abused animal, employing handling tactics that invite and encourage partnership rather than submission from fear or depression.  Founded by a woman who was involved with the training and care of animals for movies and television who knows firsthand that attitudes of love and compassion are a rarity in the field, the PAWS sanctuaries span three locations in rural Northern California areas.

In addition to providing homes for many types of wildlife, the leaders of PAWS (Pat Derby and Ed Stewart) partner with programs in other countries such as Mexico and India in order to help preserve natural habitats and lessen the human/animal conflict that so often ends in a losing experience for the animal.  As a leading advocate for legislation and education across many levels of exotic animal care, PAWS teaches by example first and foremost, demonstrating to its fans worldwide just how happy an elephant like Annie (pictured above from the PAWS photo gallery) can be when treated kindly and with respect.

Now, in the midst of preparing for the arrival of three elephants being "retired" from the Toronto zoo, PAWS is in even more need for some extra peanuts should you have any to spare.
