Friendly Beasts, Day 6: Return to Freedom (American Wild Horse Sanctuary)

The first sanctuary established with a focus on rescuing entire family bands, Return to Freedom has become a safe place for almost 200 wild horses.  Striving to establish the American Wild Horse as a wildlife species, with the protections and grants made available with such status, Return to Freedom offers the opportunity to preserve and observe one of the last symbols left of the American frontier.

Because today's modern American Wild Horse is made of varying bloodlines, from Spanish royalty to draft herds, Return to Freedom manages the herds according to their geographic origins not only in their handling (when handling is necessary) but in their conservancy plans and educational models.  They also believe that, when given the opportunity to witness firsthand the natural beauty of the landscape and the American Wild Horse in it, observers will feel the necessity of protecting this living history.

Youth programs, retreats, volunteer programs and work studies are all offered as part of their educational focus and events ranging from nighttime observations to clinics to meditation opportunities provide openings for the public to learn about this animal and its spaces.  Visitors to the Web site can shop for gifts for friends and family while supporting the organization's efforts with funding towards keeping the operation running.  They can also find out about legislative opportunities with which they can help by voicing their own viewpoints to their elected officials.

Find out more from their Web site, listed above, or visit them on Facebook by searching for "Return To Freedom, American Wild Horse Sanctuary".
