Friendly Beasts, Day 1: Alley Cat Allies

http://www.alleycat.org/

Founded in 1990 in order to educate and advocate for stray and feral cats whose needs were not being met by current animal shelter care policies and guidelines, Alley Cat Allies is the only national advocacy organization dedicated to such protections.  As such, they have become a hub of resources, information and support for the thousands of smaller organizations and individuals across the United States who are involved with the humane care of stray and feral felines.

They introduced the Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) program, and have since provided education for similar types of services throughout American communities, teaching crowded neighborhoods that such animals are not a nuisance if cared for (i.e. spayed/neutered to help prevent overpopulation) and demonstrating that death is not the only answer for "dealing" with these feral cats.

As more people come to learn about the care and welfare of animals in general, the mission and services of Alley Cat Allies has started expanding globally.  People interested in finding out about TNR programs in their own area can contact the group for training information, connections to others in their local area involved with these activities, even databases of veterinarians that offer services for these types of programs.

Visit Alley Cat Allies at the Web site linked above, or "like" their Facebook page (Alley Cat Allies in Bethesda, MD, when you do your search) to learn more about how you can be an ally for the feral/stray cat population too.
