Friendly Beasts, Day 4: The Gentle Barn

http://gentlebarn.org/

Brought more prominently to the public's awareness because of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, The Gentle Barn is a home for 130 animals rescued from severe neglect or abuse, or from sad endings at a slaughterhouse.  It is a home-away-from home for the visitors that come to pet, cuddle, feed, groom, learn, and love the residents there.  With special focuses on special needs programs and community connections with children's homes that serve abused and neglected children, creatures (human and not) that have previously been afraid learn to come out of their shells, realizing the healing of soft words and gentle touches.

Visitors to their facility in Santa Clarita can stop in for a Sunday stroll, arrange for a classroom field trip with their students, or set up private birthday parties complete with cow-brushing and pig-belly rubs.  Visitors to the Web site can "adopt" specific animals with their donation, sponsoring the care and feeding of animals like sweet little Sophie (pictured above from their Web gallery).  For your animal-loving friends, their online store offers a variety of options from clothing to coffee mugs, and the purchases benefit the animals by keeping the operation running.  Locals can even volunteer to help keep the animals groomed and cared for.

In addition to the Web site mentioned above, you can find The Gentle Barn on Facebook (search for them by that name), and they are also on Twitter (@GentleBarn), so you can connect with them any time for the latest news on their activities and their animals.
